New High School Name Revealed: Two Rivers Secondary School (2026)

Attention, Guelph! We're about to embark on an exciting journey to find the perfect name for our new high school, and it's a story you won't want to miss!

The Quest for a Name: A Tale of Rivers and Communities

Amidst the shortlist of potential names, one stands out: Two Rivers Secondary School. But here's where it gets intriguing - this name has sparked a wave of enthusiasm and debate.

The Upper Grand District School Board is on the brink of making a decision, and it's a crucial one. The name must be approved by the trustees and then submitted to the Minister of Education for the final stamp of approval. A report detailing these recommendations will be presented to the finance and facilities committee, and the process is already underway.

This new school, located at 388 Arkell Rd., is an impressive 894-student capacity, spanning 108,000 square feet. Construction began last year, and the target opening date is set for September. Since then, the school's naming policy has been revised, prohibiting names associated with individuals or corporations.

A public survey, conducted from October 11th to 24th, garnered an impressive 923 participants. Out of the 709 name ideas, 276 were approved based on the school naming criteria. These names were carefully shortlisted by a dedicated committee and reviewed by the Human Rights, Equity, and Accessibility Office, as well as the First Nation, Métis, Inuit Education Council.

The shortlist included: Between the Lakes, Miskwaadesi (an Ojibwe word meaning 'painted turtle'), Royal Arbour, Stonebridge, and the front-runner, Two Rivers.

During a town hall consultation last month, the names were ranked, and the results were telling. Two Rivers emerged as the clear favorite, receiving a whopping 42% of the vote, while Between the Lakes received none.

The school naming committee strongly recommended Two Rivers, and it's easy to see why. Survey participants highlighted the significance of the Speed River and Eramosa River, which flow through Guelph, shaping the city's landscape and connecting towns and families. The name resonates with the community's deep connection to these natural elements.

Treaty partners also valued the name's reference to the rivers as a traditional meeting place, symbolizing sustainability and environmental respect. Survey participants saw the name as a gateway to further exploration of Indigenous education, and a connection to the board's multi-year plan to lead through sustainability.

So, Guelph, what do you think? The decision is almost final, but we want to hear your thoughts. Do you agree with the choice of Two Rivers? Or do you have another name in mind that captures the essence of our community? Let's spark a conversation and celebrate the power of naming our new high school!
