The British Medical Association (BMA) has accused Health Secretary Wes Streeting of spreading fear and using a "cruel and calculated" approach, as they prepare for devastating strike action. Streeting warned that strikes before Christmas could push the NHS over the edge, but the BMA claims his actions are disingenuous.
But here's where it gets controversial... The BMA is demanding a staggering 29% pay rise for its members, and with strikes set to begin on December 17th, they seem ready to intensify the pressure on an already fragile NHS.
Dr. Jack Fletcher, chairman of the BMA's resident doctors committee, said, "Mr. Streeting should not scare the public into thinking the NHS can't handle it." He added that the Health Secretary is quick to blame resident doctors but slow to act, offering a poor deal with little time for consideration.
BMA chief Dr. Tom Dolphin insists the NHS crisis is year-round, not just winter-specific, and that senior doctors can step in to ensure patient safety during strikes. However, NHS Providers CEO Daniel Elkeles warns that the flu surge requires all hands on deck, and Dr. Jeanette Dickson from the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges expresses concern about the impact of further industrial action on patients.
The government stands firm, stating that further pay increases are off the table after resident doctors received nearly 30% pay rises in the last three years. Public support for strikes is low, with only 33% showing some support, according to a YouGov survey.
And this is the part most people miss... The BMA's stance also reflects a growing divide with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who called the strikes "reckless" and "beyond belief" in a Guardian article.
With flu cases at a record high for this time of year, jumping 55% in a week, the NHS is under immense pressure. Streeting urges resident doctors to accept the deal, warning that Christmas strikes could be the final straw.
