Nigerian Healthcare in Crisis: Private Sector to the Rescue?
The future of Nigeria's healthcare system hangs in the balance, with a stark warning from the Health Federation of Nigeria (HFN) that its collapse is imminent without the full integration of private healthcare providers. This bold statement comes as foreign aid to the health sector dwindles and public hospitals face mounting challenges.
But here's where it gets controversial: Mrs. Njide Ndili, HFN President, believes the private sector is being overlooked despite shouldering a significant portion of the country's healthcare burden. She asserts that nearly 70% of healthcare delivery or facilitation is handled by private entities, yet they are treated as an afterthought in policy implementation.
The HFN's advocacy efforts have not been in vain, though. A 69-page report detailing their engagements with government institutions has led to a signed agreement with the Presidential Initiative on Healthcare, covering various critical areas. Additionally, private providers have been included in the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Compact, marking a historic first for Nigeria.
And this is the part most people miss: The HFN's 4th Annual Conference, scheduled for March 2026, aims to foster collaboration and showcase the private sector's potential. Mrs. Ndili emphasizes that the survival of the healthcare system depends on partnerships, stating, "Without collaboration, the healthcare crisis will only deepen." The conference will feature policy dialogues, investor sessions, and innovation showcases, offering a platform for private providers to engage directly with policymakers.
Mrs. Irene Nwaukwa, Chair of the Conference Planning Committee, promises a forum for real accountability and engagement. She challenges private providers to confront policymakers, asking when Nigerians will see the results of announced policies. The focus is on collective growth, as isolated centers of excellence alone cannot solve the healthcare crisis.
A critical issue arises: Financing. Mr. Olufemi Akingbade, HFN Executive Secretary, highlights the misconception of healthcare as a social service, arguing that it is a business requiring capital. Over 400 private sector organizations face challenges accessing financing, posing a significant threat to healthcare delivery. The private sector's innovation, which has revolutionized banking and telecoms, could be the key to unlocking healthcare insurance for millions of Nigerians.
Mr. Adekoya Abimbola Julius, Chairman of the Guild of Medical Laboratory Directors, Lagos State Chapter, calls for unity and structured collaboration. He urges healthcare providers to present clear projects and speak with one voice to secure financing and support. Without coordinated planning and well-defined proposals, attracting investment and institutional backing will remain an uphill battle.
