A Filipino Success Story in Dubai: From OFW to Entrepreneur
In a heartwarming tale of determination and passion, a former overseas Filipino worker (OFW) has made her mark in Dubai's entrepreneurial scene. Marilou Lorenzo Joson, a proud graduate of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, has embarked on an inspiring journey that showcases the best of Filipino craftsmanship and innovation.
But here's where it gets controversial... Joson's story challenges the traditional narrative of OFWs solely seeking employment abroad. She embarked on a mission to showcase the Philippines' unique materials and designs, and her hard work paid off.
At a recent meeting with Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Joson represented the Philippines' sustainable innovation. This meeting, part of the 11th Design Week in November 2025, was a testament to her entrepreneurial spirit and the recognition of her unique contribution.
Her Highness Sheikha Latifa, the daughter of Dubai's ruler and the country's vice president and prime minister, described the encounter as an "inspiring story of passion and determination." She recognized Joson's journey as a testament to Dubai's belief in its people and their dreams.
Joson's entrepreneurial journey began at a young age, selling local treats and beverages in her neighborhood. Growing up as the breadwinner, she worked tirelessly to support her family and pursue her education. Her hard work and determination led her to Dubai, where she started as a sales executive in a luxury furniture showroom.
"I became an integral part of the business, trusted by the owner," Joson shared. However, when the shop closed after 19 years, Joson faced a crossroads. Despite lucrative offers from other companies, she chose to stay true to her roots and start her own venture.
And this is the part most people miss... Joson's decision to represent 100% Filipino-made products was a bold move. She wanted to continue the legacy of showcasing the Philippines' unique designs and works, and thus, DMJ Ecospace Home Furniture Trading LLC was born.
DMJ recently launched Casa Filipina - The Home of Filipino Products, which made history as the first 100% Filipino booth at the Design Week Market Place. This achievement was made possible with the support of Dubai's design community, Filipino organizations, and the Philippine Trade and Investment Center.
Joson's story is a reminder that entrepreneurship knows no borders. It showcases the power of passion, determination, and a deep connection to one's roots. So, what do you think? Is Joson's journey an inspiration or a controversial move? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
