New Mexico governor sets priorities for lawmakers. Public safety and child wellbeing top the list

  • By SUSAN MONTOYA BRYAN - Associated Press

Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is tasking lawmakers to come up with public safety solutions amid persistently high crime rates that have put citizens in many communities on edge. She delivered her State of the State address Tuesday, kicking off a 60-day legislative session in which curbing crime and boosting child wellbeing are top priorities. The governor said New Mexico’s crime problems destabilize the very communities that she and lawmakers are seeking to empower. This session likely is the last chance for Lujan Grisham to tackle big legislative initiatives before she terms out of office in 2026.

Virginia Democrats pass constitutional amendments blasted by Republicans

  • By OLIVIA DIAZ - Associated Press/Report for America

The Democrat-led Virginia Senate has voted to enshrine the right to an abortion and to vote in the state's constitution. The measures passed Tuesday on two party-line votes. In a 24-15 bipartisan vote, lawmakers also passed a resolution repealing a now-defunct ban on same-sex marriage. The Democrat-led Virginia House of Delegates passed similar legislation on all three issues earlier this month. Virginia Republicans said the abortion and voting rights amendments interfere with parents' and victims' rights. The voting amendment revises the state's current method of restoring voting rights to people convicted of felonies.

How Trump will immediately seek to dismantle Biden's sprawling federal DEI programs

  • By ALEXANDRA OLSON - AP Business Writer

President Donald Trump has ordered a sweeping dismantling of the federal government’s diversity and inclusion programs that could include everything from anti-bias training to funding for minority farmers and homeowners. The order gives all federal agencies 60 days to close all offices and positions dedicated to diversity, equity and inclusion, and dismantle or reform diversity-related grants and contracts. The step is the first salvo in an aggressive campaign to upend DEI efforts nationwide, including leveraging the Justice Department and other agencies to investigate private companies pursuing training and hiring practices that conservative critics consider discriminatory against non-minority groups such as white men.

Assistant coaches say interviewing during the NFL playoffs isn't a distraction

  • By ROB MAADDI - AP Pro Football Writer

Only the coordinators who interviewed for head coaching jobs before playoff games know if those conversations with other teams were a distraction. It won’t stop people from speculating about it. The NFL’s hiring process became a hot topic after the Detroit Lions were knocked out of the playoffs. The Lions went 15-2 and earned the NFC’s No. 1 seed, but were eliminated by the Washington Commanders in the divisional round. Some disgruntled Lions fans blamed offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn for being more focused on interviews than their game plans.

Trump's embrace of meme coin sours mood in crypto industry

  • By ALAN SUDERMAN - AP Business Writer

President Donald Trump’s goodwill in the cryptocurrency industry has taken a hit after he and his wife launched meme coins — a move critics say looks like an unseemly cash grab that undermines an effort to legitimize digital assets. The industry, which felt unfairly targeted by the Biden administration and spent heavily to help Trump win, is eager for the new president’s help to make crypto a bigger part of mainstream financial systems. Trump has promised a lighter regulatory touch and picked pro-crypto officials for key government positions. By associating himself so closely with meme coins, some crypto fans worry that Trump hurts his chances to help the wider crypto industry.

Democrats struggle to pick their message against Trump's shock-and-awe campaign

  • By STEVE PEOPLES - AP National Political Writer

President Donald Trump has publicly promised a shock-and-awe campaign to deliver major policy victories, and less than 36 hours after Trump’s inauguration, Democrats are struggling to confront it. In less than two days, the Republican president has moved to end diversity and inclusion programs across the federal government, withdrawn the U.S. from the Paris climate accords, blocked a federal law banning TikTok, and sought to end the constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship. Each of those actions enrages part of the Democratic base. Together, they make it difficult to formulate a response by an already fractured party.

Residents ordered to pay $850,000 bond to appeal Ohio derailment settlement vow not to give up

  • By JOSH FUNK - Associated Press

The residents who question whether Norfolk Southern's $600 million settlement offers enough compensation for the East Palestine train crash don't plan to let a judge's order requiring an $850,000 bond derail their appeal. Instead, they've asked an appeals court to reject the judge's requirement that they put up that huge sum. The class-action attorneys who negotiated the deal say the appeal will add administrative costs for the firm distributing settlement money to those who lived or worked in the area of the February 2023 derailment. Nearly $300 million of the settlement has been on hold because of the appeal though a judge approved the deal in September.

Extreme cold and snow across the South isn't a threat to most native plants and animals, experts say

  • By COREY WILLIAMS - Associated Press

A deep freeze and rare snow have brought most things to a standstill from parts of Texas to Florida, but experts say wildlife natives like cypress trees and prairie plants, and cold-blooded gators and snakes, should be alright. A rare winter storm dumped snow Tuesday across parts of the South as it barreled east toward Florida. A University of Louisiana at Lafayette graduate student who works in a climate change adaptation lab for plants says populations of native plants have been around for millennia. Houston Zoo's vice president of animal programs says most local animal species can ride out the extreme weather, but sea turtles can get ‘cold-stunned’ by sudden temperature drops.
