YORK OBSERVER Sunday, January 21, 1990 Interior Secretary To Hold Meeting On Catawba Suit By BILL CHAPMAN Staff Writer ROCK HILL U.S. Interior Secretary Manuel Lujan has agreed to meet with S.C. officials about the Catawba Indian land claim. The meeting with Gov. Carroll Campbell, Rep.
John Spratt, D- S.C., and state Tax Commissioner Crawford Clarkson. at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Lujan's office. Clarkson was selected by Campbell to lead a committee studying the Catawba Indian dispute. Robert Hopkins, spokesman for Spratt, said Campbell wrote Lujan last week asking for federal involvement in any settlement discussion.
"It will be a fairly short meeting outlining what has happened in the past and certain legal points," Hopkins said. Hopkins said the secretary will decide who will sit in on future committee meetings, but "it'll probably be an assistant solicitor in the Department of Interior." The Catawbas in 1980 sued to reclaim 140,000 acres in York, Chester and Lancaster counties, claiming an 1850 treaty that gave the land to the state is invalid. Hopkins said Spratt believes both sides need to sit down and discuss conditions of a settlement. "For a long time, (Spratt) has wanted to get representatives of the Indians, representatives of local and state government and the federal government to sit down at one table in the same room and explore those conditions," Hopkins said. Lancaster County Man Shot To Death In Heath Springs HEATH SPRINGS A Lancaster County man was killed Friday morning when he was shot in the chest with a handgun. Barry Gene Hinson, 29, died instantly after being shot in the upper left side of his chest with a pistol, Lancaster County Coroner Mike Morris said. Hinson was found lying face down in a bedroom at the Route 2 home of Brenda Blackmon in the Flint Ridge area of Heath Springs. Patrick Helms, 18, of Route 1, Heath Springs, was arrested by the Lancaster County Sheriff's Department and charged with murder and kidnapping in the shooting.
He is being held without bond at Lancaster County Detention Center. According to an arrest warrant and sheriff's report, Helms had gone to Blackmon's house in search of Dorothy Missy Hinson, who sheriff's officials believe was once married to Barry Hinson. Dorothy Hinson was staying with Blackmon. Major John Cauthen of the sheriff's department said an argument between Helms and Barry Hinson happened shortly thereafter. After Hinson was shot, Helms grabbed Dorothy Hinson and took her a short distance to a relative's house.
Helms was arrested about 30 minutes later at the relative's house by sheriff's deputies. Funeral services for Hinson, who was a brick mason, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Rich Hill Baptist Church.
