A bold move to protect the youth: Uasin Gishu takes a stand against illicit substances. The battle against illegal drugs and alcohol has reached a critical juncture in Eldoret city. Six individuals were recently arrested in a targeted operation by the Uasin Gishu County authorities, in collaboration with the Directorate of Alcoholic Drinks Control Board (DADB) and security officers.
The crackdown, which took place near a school along the Eldoret-Kisumu road, highlights a growing concern over the exposure of students to harmful substances. The arrested individuals were found in possession of shisha, a stimulant drug often smoked through a water pipe, containing nicotine and other potentially dangerous chemicals.
Led by Director Koiya Arap Maiyo, the DADB team emphasized that the operation targeted establishments operating illegally. Notably, those arrested were primarily young people, some suspected to be students, who were new to the city.
Speaking after the operation, Maiyo praised the officers' swift action and reiterated the county's commitment to safeguarding young people. "We draw a firm line against dangerous substances infiltrating our communities, educational institutions, and entertainment venues. Our teams are vigilant, and anyone caught selling illegal drinks or drugs will face legal consequences," he declared.
Maiyo also urged residents to report any suspicious activities, especially during the festive season, when such operations are intensified.
This crackdown follows concerns raised by the Kesses MP, who highlighted the alarming rise in alcohol and drug abuse among the youth in Eldoret. The MP urged security agencies to take decisive action against dealers, emphasizing the vulnerability of the city's large student population to illegal operations.
Authorities further expressed concern over the circulation of chemicals used in the production of illicit alcohol and assured that steps are being taken to address this issue. Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Edisson Nyale confirmed that security teams are actively monitoring the situation and that arrests have already been made regarding the manufacture and sale of illicit alcohol.
Maiyo added that bars and clubs operating illegally near educational institutions have been shut down to ensure that schools and colleges remain safe learning environments.
