That's the groundbreaking vision brought to life by a collaboration between ALLIED Feather + Down, NetPlus, PERTEX, Resortecs, and Peak Performance. They've joined forces to create the R&D Helium Loop Anorak, a jacket designed from the ground up for true circularity, and it's changing the game.
For years, the outdoor industry has struggled with the challenge of recycling complex products made from a mix of materials. Think about it: a jacket with down insulation, zippers, and elastic trims is incredibly difficult to take apart at the end of its life. But here's where innovation shines. Peak Performance, known for its Swedish backcountry ski apparel, teamed up with these sustainability leaders to prove that circularity is not just a dream, but a tangible reality.
Matthew Betcher, Creative Director with ALLIED, highlights a critical point: "Garments need to be designed for circularity before any sense of recyclability can even start to be possible." This project demonstrates that brands can't just rely on ingredient partners and startups; they need to be actively involved in the design process from the very beginning.
So, what makes this jacket so special? Each partner brings a unique piece to the puzzle:
- ALLIED Feather + Down: Provides the 800-fill power down, a renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable insulation. This ensures the warmth and performance of the jacket without the environmental burden.
- NetPlus: Transforms discarded fishing net waste into 100% PCR nylon yarn. This innovative material reduces ocean pollution and gives new life to waste.
- PERTEX: Weaves the NetPlus yarn into the shell and liner of the Helium Loop, creating durable and high-performing fabric.
- Resortecs: Uses Smart Stitch™, a heat-activated thread that allows for easy material separation. This clever technology enables the jacket to be taken apart at the end of its life, allowing the down and shell material to be recycled individually.
Designer Marie Andersson emphasizes that true circularity isn't about compromise; it's about designing garments to be "unmade as thoughtfully as they're made." The Helium Loop Anorak proves that when premium materials meet thoughtful disassembly design, circularity becomes a performance advantage.
David Stover, CEO of Bureo (the company behind NetPlus), adds that this project is a win for the outdoor community, demonstrating how responsible materials and design can prevent pollution and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Technical outerwear is often built from virgin plastic, which has a negative impact on people and the planet. By connecting better materials with thoughtful design, the Peak Performance team is pushing the industry away from fossil fuels.
The Helium Loop Anorak is a significant step towards Peak Performance’s commitment to achieving total range circularity by 2030.
